How to prepare for a newborn session?

For your newborn session to go smoothly and pleasantly, very little preparation is needed on your part - here is what is worth knowing before your visit to the studio.

How to prepare for a newborn session?

For your newborn session to go smoothly and pleasantly for all of us, very little preparation is needed on your part.

In my studio I have made sure there is a pleasant atmosphere and everything you need to spend your newborn session in comfort. You will find a bathroom and an area with a changing table for your little one. There is also a coffee corner, where we can make coffee from the machine or a flavoured tea, or you can heat water for formula milk. The studio is warm, so you do not need to worry about the right temperature for your newborn.

What to bring to a newborn session?

what to bring to a newborn session

MILK – in whatever form you use
NAPPIES – about 5-6. During the session little ones can do their poos in instalments, so for their comfort we may change nappies more often
MUSLIN CLOTHS – 2, handy for burping your baby and for laying on the changing table available in the studio
BLANKET – for swaddling your little one between photos and during feeds
DUMMY – if your baby uses one or you plan to use one. Sometimes giving a dummy even for a moment helps the little one fall asleep for the next photos

Skip the sun cream that day. Sun creams for babies have a thick, greasy consistency and leave a film on the skin that is hard to wash off. The skin then looks bluish, and small flakes of skin can clump at the hairline. If you are worried about your newborn’s peeling skin, bath your baby the day before in water with added emollients. They moisturise the skin best. It will be easier for me to retouch a few peeling flakes than to deal with a large area shiny with cream 🙂 If it turns out to be a sunny day, use a muslin cloth instead to shade your baby on the way to the studio.

If you would like bare-baby photos, do not put greasy creams on your baby’s bottom on the day of the session. If your baby does not have nappy rash, a few hours without cream will not be a problem.

Clothes for parents and siblings

I will take care of the wardrobe for your newborn 🙂 You, on the other hand, should think about clothes for yourselves, the parents, and for older children if they are taking part in the session. Below I will show you a few examples of families who prepared their family wardrobe for the photo session brilliantly. Here we have examples 1 and 2, with elegant outfits in a well-chosen colour palette that works together to create a harmonious whole:

If you would prefer more natural family photos — your sons will not be talked into smart jackets, nor your daughters into dresses — then go for a natural look. 🙂 Blue jeans, light T-shirts and we have a great family look.

For lovers of more muted, classic shots there is also the option of photos on a dark backdrop, or simply black-and-white photos. In that case, prepare black clothes; for mums I can also lend a maternity dress in this colour, shown in the photo below.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ

What should I bring to a newborn session?

Milk, 5-6 nappies, 2 muslin cloths, a blanket for swaddling between photos and a dummy if your baby uses one. I provide the wardrobe for your newborn myself.

Should I put cream on my baby before the session?

No - it is better to skip sun cream on the day of the session, as it leaves a film on the skin that is hard to wash off. For peeling skin, a bath with emollients the day before is enough.

What clothes should parents and siblings prepare?

An elegant, colour-coordinated set of outfits, or a simpler version - blue jeans and light T-shirts. There is also the option of dark clothes for black-and-white photos, and mum can borrow a dark maternity dress.

Does my baby need their own wardrobe for the session?

No - I take care of the styling and accessories for your newborn. Parents only prepare clothes for themselves and for older siblings, if they are taking part in the session.
