Baby Session — How It Differs from a Newborn Session and When to Book It

A baby session for children aged approx. 6–9 months – how it differs from a newborn session, when to plan it and how to prepare your child.

Baby Session — How It Differs from a Newborn Session and When to Book It

A baby session is a term that people often confuse with a newborn session. In fact, it is about a completely different stage. If your child is already a few months old, sits up, reacts to toys and smiles at mum and dad, this is exactly the moment worth capturing.

Baby session vs newborn session — what is the difference?

A newborn session takes place in the first 5–14 days of life. At that stage the little one mostly sleeps and can be gently posed. A baby session, on the other hand, has a completely different energy. A child aged around 6–9 months is already aware of their surroundings, sits up unaided and reaches for toys.

So instead of posing them in a basket, we photograph natural emotions: first funny faces, curiosity and playing together with mum and dad.

When is the best time for a baby session?

I most often recommend the point when your child can already sit steadily. This is usually around the 6th–8th month. At that age the little one is alert enough to show their personality, but is not walking yet. That makes it easier to compose the shots.

If you would like photos of crawling or the first attempts at standing up, we can plan the session a little later. We always agree on this individually.

What will be in the photos?

A baby session in the studio usually includes several scenes: portraits of the little one, shots with parents and siblings, moments of play with a favourite toy and spontaneous smiles. We do not set up stiff poses. We work so that your child feels at ease and the photos come out authentic.

How to prepare your child for a baby session

  • Plan the session for a time when your child is usually well rested, for example late morning after a nap.
  • Do not plan the session straight after a vaccination or during teething if your little one is grumpy.
  • Bring a favourite toy or rattle, as it helps to bring out a natural smile.
  • Choose a comfortable, stretchy outfit rather than stiff, formal clothes.

Baby session with parents

This is a great time for photos with mum and dad. Your child already responds to your voice and touch, so the shots together are full of emotion. What is more, we can combine the session with “mummy and me” photos. You will find more ideas in the post mummy and me session.

How to book a date

Write to me via the contact form and tell me your child’s age. I will then suggest a date at the studio in Gocław. Take a look at the children’s studio session and family session offers too. I show sample shots on Instagram.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ

How is a baby session different from a newborn session?

A newborn session takes place in the first 5–14 days of life, when the baby sleeps a lot and can be gently posed. A baby session (approx. 6–9 months) is about natural emotions, play and interaction with the parents, because the little one is already aware of their surroundings.

What is the best age for a baby session?

I most often recommend the point when your child can sit up steadily on their own — usually around the 6th–8th month.

How should I prepare my child for a baby session?

Plan the session for a time when your child is rested and fed, bring a favourite toy and dress them comfortably. Avoid booking a date straight after a vaccination.

What if my child gets grumpy during the session?

In the studio we have time — we take breaks, feed and change the baby. We take photos when the little one is ready, never by force.
