A children’s session isn’t just a first birthday or a newborn session — it’s a portrait of your child at any stage of childhood, with no special occasion needed. More and more parents choose this kind of session simply because children grow faster than we manage to notice. Here’s what’s worth knowing.

What age is a children’s session for?
Unlike a newborn or first birthday session, a children’s session works at practically any age — from a crawling toddler to a preschooler and an older school-age child. The older the child, the more play and conscious interaction with the camera, which gives a completely different, more “characterful” result than baby photos.
What occasions is a children’s session for?
You don’t need a special reason — although many families choose this kind of session for a name day, a change of season, as a keepsake of a particular stage (e.g. the first day at preschool or school) or simply as a gift for the grandparents. Seasonal set-ups — spring flowers, summer pastels, autumn colours — work wonderfully as a yearly tradition you can come back to.

How to prepare an older child for the session?
- Ask your child if they have an idea for their session — older children love having a say in choosing outfits or props.
- Don’t promise “a nice photo for sitting nicely” — the best shots come from natural play, not forced posing.
- Plan the session for the time when your child has the most energy and is in the best mood — usually in the morning.
- If your child has a favourite toy, book or outfit, do bring it along — it’s often the best way to get a genuine smile.

What to wear?
Simple, muted colours without large prints work best — they keep the focus on your child rather than the clothes. I also have accessories and outfits in the studio, so if you don’t have an idea for styling, I’ll happily suggest something on site.
