Newborn Session – When to Have It? The Ideal Age and How to Plan the Date

When to have a newborn session: the ideal age, how to book a date without knowing the exact birth date and what if the session happens later. A guide from a Warsaw photographer.

Newborn Session – When to Have It? The Ideal Age and How to Plan the Date

One of the first questions I hear from new and expectant parents is: when exactly should we have a newborn session? The timing matters — and it is worth planning it ahead, before the birth.

What is the ideal age for a newborn session?

The best time is usually days 5–14 of the baby’s life. During this time your little one still sleeps a lot and deeply, which allows for those characteristic, delicate shots in poses reminiscent of their time in the womb. In addition, a newborn’s skin is at its smoothest then and the reflexes (e.g. the grasp reflex) are at their strongest — so the photos look natural and “soft”.

How do you book a date when the birth date is uncertain?

This is the most common question — and here is the good news: you don’t need to know the exact date of birth to book. I reserve dates based on the estimated due date, and once your baby has arrived, you simply message me and together we agree a specific session day within the optimal window. A flexible date is standard — I know births rarely stick to the calendar.

What if the session happens later than 14 days?

If for some reason you miss the ideal window (e.g. your baby was born prematurely and needs more time, or you simply only caught your breath after a few weeks) — it is no problem at all. Older babies are usually more awake and less “posable” in the classic poses, but then I suggest a more natural kind of session — with the parents, in soft, bright light, focused on emotions rather than perfect poses.

Your baby’s safety comes first

I do every pose with full care for the baby’s safety — no stretching, no risky positioning. The effect of a “perfect” pose is often created in post-production, by combining several safe shots, rather than in one risky frame. Your little one always comes before the photo.

When should you get in touch?

Ideally as early as the third trimester of pregnancy — that gives us time to plan the date calmly, without rushing just after the birth, when you have completely different priorities. If your baby has already been born and you are only now thinking about it — do get in touch too; I always try to find a convenient date.

FAQ

On which day of the baby's life is a newborn session best?

The best time is days 5–14 — your little one sleeps a lot and settles easily into natural, delicate poses.

Do I need to know the exact birth date to book?

No. I reserve dates based on the estimated due date, and we agree the specific session day only once the baby is born.

What if the session takes place later than 14 days after the birth?

That is no problem — I then suggest a more natural kind of session, with the parents, focused on emotions rather than classic, arranged poses.

Are newborn poses safe?

Yes. I take every shot with full care for safety — no stretching and no risky positioning. The effect of a perfect pose is often created in post-production.
