A Christmas session is one of the warmest keepsakes you can give yourselves at the end of the year. It can be a Christmas card, a gift for grandparents or simply a photo you will come back to every Christmas to come. In this guide I show you how to prepare for a Christmas session — step by step, before you book.

When should you book a Christmas session?
This is one of the most important things: Christmas dates go faster than any others in the year. If you have a particular date in mind — for example before a trip or a family gathering — it is best to book as early as the beginning of November. The Christmas sets in the studio are only available for a few weeks, so the diary fills up very quickly.
What should you wear for a Christmas session?
- Muted, warm colours work best — bottle green, burgundy, creamy beige, soft pink. They go beautifully with the Christmas set.
- Avoid large, contrasting patterns and neon colours — they draw attention away from you and quickly “date” in a photo.
- If the whole family is taking part in the session, you don’t have to dress identically. It is enough to match each other in the same colour palette.
- No idea what to wear? In the studio I have Christmas accessories and props that will help complete the shot.

What does the Christmas set look like in the studio?
Every year I prepare several different, atmospheric Christmas corners. There are classic, elegant Christmas decorations, warm, cosy interiors and — for the youngest — a fairy-tale Santa’s workshop. Everything is filled with the glow of fairy lights, soft blankets and Christmas props. This way the photos keep their festive mood whatever the weather happens to be doing outside.

A Christmas session as a gift
This is one of my clients’ favourite ideas — a voucher for a Christmas session makes a great gift for grandparents, parents or the whole family. Instead of yet another gadget, you give someone time and a memory that will last for years. I regularly share more inspiration on Instagram.

How to prepare for a Christmas session on the day of the shoot?
The session lasts about an hour. We start by choosing the set and styling, and then simply enjoy time together with Christmas music and the warm glow of fairy lights. If a child is taking part, you don’t need to worry about “perfect posing”. The most beautiful shots come from natural, spontaneous moments anyway.
