A family session is not just another “posed” photo for the wall — it captures how you really are together. Here I have gathered practical tips: when to have this kind of session, how to prepare the children and what to expect on the day of the shoot.

When should you have a family session?
A family session works at pretty much any time — you do not need a special occasion. Many families choose one around a child’s birthday or before Christmas — for a card or a gift for the grandparents. Others simply notice that their children are growing faster than the photos on the wall. If you would like a particular seasonal feel, let me know and we will match the date and the set.
How do you prepare children for the session?
- Do not promise your child that they “will have to stand nicely for the photo” — a family session with me is play, not posing, so movement and emotions are very welcome.
- Plan the session for a time when your child is well rested and fed — it really does make a difference.
- Bring a favourite toy or cuddly toy — it is great for relaxing the atmosphere and gives your child a sense of security.
- Do not worry if something does not go “to plan” — the most genuine photos often come out of chaos, not out of a perfect arrangement.

Boho family session or studio?
A boho family session means warm, muted colours, natural fabrics and soft light. It works beautifully for families who like a “less posed”, more natural feel. A classic studio session, on the other hand, gives full control over the backdrop and the light. It is ideal if you want a coordinated, elegant look for your wall. With either option I can suggest matching outfits from the studio wardrobe, so you do not have to hunt for them on your own.

What should you wear for a family session?
What works best is a few muted colours from the same palette — for example beiges, powder pink and deep greens. Rather than exactly the same clothes for everyone, this gives a coordinated yet natural effect. Avoid big prints and very bright colours, which draw attention away from you. If you have no idea what to wear, I am happy to help — I also have plenty of outfits in the studio that you can borrow on the spot.

What does the day of a family session look like, step by step?
We start calmly. This is a moment to get used to the camera and to me, which is especially important if young children are taking part. Then we take photos of the whole family and of pairs — mum with child, dad with child. On top of that come individual portraits, so that everyone has their own shot. The whole session lasts about an hour, at a pace suited to the youngest participant — with no rush and no pressure for “the perfect smile”.
