For years I have had the pleasure of accompanying brand-new parents through one of the most beautiful moments of their lives – just after the birth of their baby. For me, newborn photography is more than just photos – it is about holding on to those fleeting first moments forever. Every year I watch how families’ tastes, expectations and needs change. What is in fashion today? What are parents looking for? What are the global trends in newborn photography? I am delighted to tell you all about it!
Naturalness and minimalism
More and more parents are looking for photos that capture real emotions – without too many props, without going over the top. Minimalist shots, natural light, muted colours – this is what reigns all over the world today. Babies are photographed in simple, delicate set-ups, against neutral backgrounds, often in their parents’ arms. Such photographs are timeless and full of tenderness.

Family portraits full of emotion, not just photos of the newborn
More and more often parents want to be part of the session – and I am so glad about that! It is no longer just photos of the little one alone, but also portraits together with mum, dad and often older siblings too. These shots have huge emotional value, because they show the bond, love and closeness. And years later, children are deeply moved when they look at photos of themselves being cuddled by their parents. A newborn session with the family is a keepsake for the whole family. You can give photos from my session to the grandmas, grandads and the baby’s godparents. And it is precisely them
Boho and vintage style
Set-ups inspired by nature and the boho aesthetic are still very fashionable. Beiges, ecru, greens, lace, linen fabrics and wooden accessories create an idyllic, warm atmosphere in the photos. Many mums fall in love with this aesthetic, because it is cosy and visually very “soft” – perfect for newborn shots. Such photos look beautiful on the walls of flats and homes that reflect this style. Boho newborn photos are warm, natural and, I think, truly timeless.

Personalisation and unique ideas
Every family is different – and more and more often parents want the session to reflect their style, interests or dreams. Sometimes it is a theme from a favourite book, dad’s favourite helmet, a blanket from grandma. Sometimes the tone is set by the colours of the baby’s nursery, sometimes by subtle references to family traditions. I am glad that parents are increasingly aware of the countless possibilities and tell me about their dreams – and I love creating “made-to-measure” sessions. From my own work I can mention a few recent newborn sessions: one mum dreamt of a photo with little frogs, because her baby daughter was like Thumbelina to her. Another time the theme of a little boy’s nursery was to be a little fox, and this photo was created especially for them. If you have an idea for your own special newborn photo, let me know – we will certainly find a creative solution just for you.

Lifestyle – authenticity at home
Alongside classic studio sessions, lifestyle sessions are becoming hugely popular – that is, natural photos taken in the family’s home. No studio props, in your own clothes, but with genuine emotions. Feeding, cuddling, first smiles and glances. Parents want photos that tell their story, in their own world. The only drawback of such sessions is that you have to make sure the house is tidy, so that the supporting cast does not spoil our shots 😛 Because, you know, it is supposed to be natural, but the neat version of natural, and that is not always easy in the first days with a newborn baby….. 🙂
Flowers, butterflies and colours in a newborn session
At the opposite end from natural, at-home photos are creative photos with flowers and colourful accessories, where the baby becomes part of a work of art. Inspirations from painting, the sea, the mountains and many, many more. This is one of my favourite branches of newborn photography, because it offers endless possibilities for arrangement. Siblings often suggest ideas. A sister with a Barbie doll? Princesses? Mermaids? No problem at all 🙂

Colour or black and white – what do parents choose?
Colour still dominates – especially in styled sessions, because it shows the subtleties of fabrics, pastel shades, the warmth of the baby’s skin and the details of the surroundings. Parents often fall in love with those soft beiges, greens and powder pinks, which are associated with the delicacy of newborns.
However, black-and-white photographs are gaining ground, especially in more emotional and artistic shots. They are often chosen to complement colour galleries – for contrast, depth and a timeless effect. Black-and-white family portraits look particularly beautiful. They are classic, elegant and truly timeless.

Why is black-and-white newborn photography back in favour?
It is timeless – such photos never go out of date. They are elegant, classic and look good in a frame, in an album or on the wall.
It brings out emotions – the absence of colour draws attention to the face, the eyes, the gesture. In black and white the emotions and the intimacy of the moment are easier to see.
Minimalism – it fits perfectly with the current trends towards simplicity and naturalness. It goes beautifully with lifestyle sessions or portraits of parents with their baby.
Versatility – black-and-white photos suit any interior, whatever its style or colour scheme.
What do I see among my clients?
More and more often parents ask me for a few photos in black and white, even if the session was styled around colour. Some fall so in love with this aesthetic that they choose the whole gallery in this style – especially if they want a more artistic, subtle effect.
It also happens that the black-and-white photos are the ones that get printed, while the colour ones stay digital. For many families it is these monochrome shots that become the most moving keepsake.
Why is now the right time for a newborn session?
Because those first days pass more quickly than you think. Your little one grows day by day and changes literally from week to week. Photos from this time are not just a keepsake – they are emotions you can relive throughout your whole life.
Fortunately, the choice today is huge – you can go for a natural look, creative set-ups, a session at home or in the studio. Whatever speaks to your heart – I am here to create a unique keepsake for you.
With many years of experience, a heart full of passion and attention to your needs – I will take the photos you dream of. Subtle, moving, beautiful. Because every story deserves to be told.
